Don't call me Sporty Spice!

Sunday joins former Spice Girl Melanie C on her new video shoot in the middle
of the Californian desert.

After a two-year absence, Mel C, 29, is back with a new single, Here It Comes
Again. Certain to be a hit, the track is taken from Mel's forthcoming album,
Reason. And that's not all she has to celebrate - she's recently found love
with construction boss Thomas Starr.

What Mel does when she's bored
"The last single came out about two years ago, but I was touring so it's not
as if I've been off enjoying myself! I was going to take some time off but I
got bored so I went back into the studio. I've spent the last year writing
and recording the album."

Her new attitude
"I'm really pleased with Here It Comes Again - it's a song with a bit of
attitude. I didn't want to come back with anything too flimsy. I'm nervous
how people will think about it."

On boyfriend Thomas Starr
"I'm in a very happy relationship with Thomas but there's no sign of wedding
bells! We went out shopping recently for jewellery for his god-daughter's
christening and people assumed we were getting engaged. We're not! But we
do like spending time together. We had a quiet New Year together because I
have such a big year coming up."

Mel on Victoria's kidnap terror
"I've never felt fearful about being kidnapped because I haven't got enough
money! Nobody would pay the ransom! But the situation must have been
horrific for Victoria and David."

Will the Spice Girls return?
"I've not spoken to Victoria in a long, long time, but I see Emma
occasionally and I went to see Mel B filming a few months ago on the Isle of
Man. It's nice to catch up, but we don't see a lot of each other. I'm proud
of what happened with the Spice Girls but there's no chance whatsoever of us
all getting back together."

On that name...
"I don't know if I'll ever shake the 'Mel C from the Spice Girls' tag, but
being called Sporty Spice does annoy me. It's embarrassing when people in
pubs point and shout 'Are you Sporty Spice?'"

Slinky Spice
"For a year now I've been looking after myself. I've been sensible with food,
I know I can't eat too many chips. I do get a lot of stick and I take it
personally. A lot has been said about me and I've been criticised so much
that once it's said, I've learnt to get over it. It does upset me still but
to a lesser degree that it once did."

Still a home-girl at heart
"I don't go clubbing in London's West End, where you know you're going to be
seen. I'd rather stay where I live and be private."

On her gold tooth
"I just got bored and decided to get rid of it. Family and friends had been
nagging me about it and one day I thought 'Yes, it's got to go'. I felt like
a change."

Tatt's the way she likes it
"I'm not getting my tattoos removed. It really hurt to have them done and it
hurts more to have them removed, so I think I'll just leave them where they
are."

On the video:

"People are being very nice about the way I look in the video, but really it's
all down to good lighting and an experienced hairdresser and make-up artist!"

"I didn't get many breaks on the video, but now and again I got to relax for a
few minutes."

"On the first day a few kids came over. I was stood in downtown LA all
dressed up, wearing loads of make-up and miming. I felt like a right idiot!"

"We went to Vasquez Canyon in the desert on the second day and it was so cold
I wanted to cry! We had to sit in people carriers with the heaters on to warm
up!"

"Shooting a video can be a painful process but it's just two days out of your
life so you can't complain."

"We had a few television crews with us - MTV was doing a video diary and CD:UK
was also there. It was all eyes on me."
